Neighborhood Patrol

 Fort Oglethorpe Citizens Police Academy

The Citizens Police Academy is an exciting way to learn about police work.  Through a well-prepared curriculum, taught once a week for 10 weeks in 2 hour sessions, students will learn about all aspects of police operations.  You will meet many of the men and women who serve on the Ft. Oglethorpe Police Department as they explain the functions of patrol officers, investigators and administrators.  You will learn how officers are trained and how to protect yourself from crime.  Interesting demonstrations will illustrate the many skills and abilities police officers must have to effectively protect the City of Ft. Oglethorpe.

An important phase of the academy is the opportunity to leave the classroom and view police work "first hand" from the seat of a patrol car.  You will ride with a patrol officer on-duty.  You will also receive training in firearms safety and will participate in a Judgmental Use of Deadly Force class taught with the aid of our state of the art Firearms Training Simulator.

Applicants are required to submit to a background investigation by the Ft. Oglethorpe Police Dept. which will include a criminal history and drivers history.  Individuals who do not meet the Georgia Police Officers Standards and Training Council standards will not be accepted into the Citizens Police Academy program.

Students must be a minimum of 21 years of age.  Class space is limited but, a waiting list will be held for future classes if the demand should exceed available space.

The Citizens Police Academy is an excellent means to become informed about crime and your police department.  It is also an opportunity to become involved in your community.  If you are interested in completing an application, please contact Doug Howell at the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department (706) 866-2544 Ext. 1913 or print all 3 applications online, fill out and bring to City Hall.
